Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about trekking with Hiking Wild? Find answers to common questions below.

What is the maximum group size?

I limit all hikes to a maximum of 6 people. This ensures everyone gets personalized attention, we can move at a comfortable pace, and the experience feels intimate rather than crowded. Small groups also minimize environmental impact and make for better wildlife viewing opportunities

What skill level are your hikes designed for?

I offer hikes for all skill levels. The Panoramas are perfect for beginners or those wanting a relaxed pace. The Ridge Liners are for intermediate hikers with some experience. The Verticals are for experienced hikers seeking challenging elevation gain. I can also customize hikes to match your specific abilities and interests.

What should I bring on a hike?

I recommend bringing: water (at least 2-3 liters), snacks (to keep you energized), proper hiking shoes, weather-appropriate clothing (layers are key), a headlamp or flashlight (just in case we have to hike in the dark) and whatever else you think you will need. I can provide a packing list when you book. Don’t worry if you don’t have all the gear—I can offer suggestions for affordable options.

What if I'm not in great physical shape?

Don’t worry! I design hikes to be achievable and enjoyable, not punishing. The Panoramas are specifically designed for people who are just starting out or want a more leisurely pace. I can also customize hikes to your fitness level. Hiking is about the experience and the journey, not about pushing yourself to exhaustion.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Safety is the top priority. I monitor the conditions closely and will keep you in the loop leading up to our start time. A little light rain usually isn’t a dealbreaker (it actually makes the woods look incredible), but if things look dicey, I’ll let you know what to expect. If we have to pull the plug due to dangerous conditions and you can’t reschedule, you’ll get a full refund.

Do you provide transportation to the trailhead?

I meet you at a pre-designated area or the trailhead parking area. I’ll provide detailed directions and parking information when you book. If you need transportation suggestions or have questions about getting there, just ask—I’m happy to help.

What is your cancellation policy?

I understand that plans change. If you need to cancel or reschedule, just let me know as soon as possible. I’m flexible and will work with you to find a time that works. Specific cancellation terms will be outlined when you book.

Can you customize a hike for my specific interests?

Absolutely! Whether you’re interested in wildlife photography, wildflower identification, historical sites, or just scenic views, I can tailor a hike to your interests. I’ve spent 25+ years exploring these trails and know how to create experiences that match what you’re looking for.

What areas do you guide?

I primarily guide hikes in Northern Virginia, West Virginia and the surrounding  area. This includes popular trails like Old Rag, Dark Hollow Falls, Chimney Top and many hidden gems that most tourists never find. I’m also happy to discuss other hiking areas if you’re interested.

Can I bring my fur baby with me?

It depends. Many trails—especially within National Parks—have strict “no pet” policies to protect wildlife. Beyond the rules, these ridges are grueling on paws and joints. Reach out about your specific trip, and I’ll check the local regulations and terrain to see if it’s a fit.
